Peralta for State Senate
Following the expulsion of Hiram Monserrate, ACT NOW canvasses on behalf of his replacement, Assemblymember, José Peralta. In a strange turn of events, however, Monserrate runs a smear campaign against Peralta, in an effort to regain his seat. Peralta wins in a landslide.
Health Care Reform
ACT NOW keeps pressure up on Congressman Michael E. McMahon (D-Staten Island), sending him this letter as a reminder of our past conversations with him on the issue of health care reform. He ultimately votes no on health care reform, and we vow to stay on him about progressive issues.
2009
Health Care Reform
ACT NOW stakes out the Staten Island Ferry Terminal to pressure Congressman Michael E. McMahon (D-Staten Island) to sign on to comprehensive health care reform.

As a result, McMahon receives hundreds of calls from his constituents and over 800 letters in favor of comprehensive health care reform. Multiple phone banks reaching out to voters in states where Senators are wavering on health care reform. Among others, ACTivists called on New Mexico constituents of Democratic Senator Jeff Bingaman to express their support of health care reform. Bingaman votes yes on health care!
Fire Monserrate
ACT NOW joins other progressive organizations calling for the resignation of NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens), citing his many misdeeds, which culminated in his conviction of assaulting his girlfriend. Monserrate refuses and is later expelled by his colleagues by a vote of 53-8.
Marriage Equality
Multiple phone banks, in partnership with Human Rights Campaign, to pressure State Senators all over New York to pass a Marriage Equality bill already passed by the NY assembly. This campaign was not successful in passing Marriage Equality, but the legislation did come to a vote and now we know where 62 Senators stand on this important issue.
Affordable Housing
Multiple phone banks, in partnership with our partners at TenantsPAC, to fight special interests in the real estate industry and help make New York an affordable place to live. ACTivists called constituents of State Senators who were on-the-fence or undeclared on important affordable housing bills already passed in the NY State assembly.
