A recent report by the Center for an Urban Future showed that middle-class New Yorkers pay a higher portion of their income towards rent compared to every other city in the country.
Programs that keep housing affordable in New York City have been gutted due to heavy lobbying by real-estate companies. Now that the majority of the State Senators are Democrats, we expect the State Legislature to repair this damage and pass bills to keep New York an affordable place to live.
In February, the Assembly passed ten affordable housing bills. These bills are now in the State Senate, waiting to be passed. Several Democrats (and New York City Republicans) refuse to take positions on some of these critical bills. ACT NOW will be phone banking and canvassing to ACTivate constituents in target districts and encourage their State Senators to keep New York City affordable! We will be partnering with TenantsPAC in this effort.
